Books and stuff

Post by Kasei on Mon 16 Feb 2015 - 21:40

What's everybody been reading ?

Recently, I've been reading way more than usual since they give you a ton of stuff to read all at once every semester. Luckily most have been quite good.
"Die Ausgesperrten" (Translated usually as "The Excluded", but the english title is apparently "Wonderful, Wonderful Times" for some weird reason) is probably my favourite out of them so far. It's dark and kinda violent at times, but it does an amazing job of showing the thoughts of four ~18 year olds in post WW2 Austria and how generally messed up life was. It's also a bit worrying when you can identify with some of the characters, when you find how it ends (spoilers : very badly).
"Foxfire : Confessions of a Girl's Gang" is a similar sort of theme, but in America, and focuses more on how generally bad life was for girls in lower-class families in cities. It's comparatively more light-hearted (but a lot of things are more light-hearted than Die Ausgesperrten...), and the writing style seems kinda bad at first since it's supposed to be one of the characters recounting what happened to the gang she was in, but you get used to it and it kinda works quite well in the end.
"Lord of the Flies" is probably something everyone has already read in england, and I planned to for ages but never got round to it. It was enjoyable though, so if anyone hasn't read it yet you might as well.

Any recommendations to give each other ? Also, if somebody wants to post links to audiobooks and stuff, that's welcome here, too.

I really want to read Lord of the Flies but haven't had a chance. For English Lit A level I'm studying the Great Gatsby, A Streetcar named Desire and Othello so I'll be reading those over the summer! I'm also part way through Of Mice And Men but it's pretty crappy so far.

Yeah I'm trying to - its quite difficult!! I'm also trying to learn German and Latin too. Pretty sure I'm trying to learn too many things at once though :/ I may leave trying to learn Japanese for some time to focus on German.

Got myself a few more German phrase books recently. Surprisingly, its actually hard to find Japanese ones in shops!

Yeah, japanese is hard, but there are some things that you should just learn right from the start that will make everything easier later on. Have you learnt hiragana/katakana ? What about any kanji ?

Latin's pretty easy to learn, but kind of a faff when you have to sit a GCSE exam in it and translate/learn off by heart 3 different ancient texts stare
