Post by Kasei Tue 6 Jan 2015 - 16:06

This forum currently has no fixed topic of discussion, and this thread doesn't, either. So, talk about whatever you want. Nobody's judging you.
The other thread is for actual suggestions on what this forum should be about, though. So it would be silly to put those here.

so its like no one know whats happening and therefore it is hard to fight against this contradictory mess

is this like capitalism fueled by the power of inequality so media says progressive things every once in a while people take these as enough of a step forward whilst the media takes a cheeky 10 steps back in a more less way that you cant see it as well

(its midnight and i cant be eloquent i hope this is at least mildly legible)

Whooaahho that's pretty trippy. I do agree that the news is often confusing and contradictory but maybe that's because there are more sources than before? There are thousands of news websites on the internet each written by a human with a unique viewpoint and bias.

Post by Guest Sat 31 Jan 2015 - 19:25

personal rant that no-one really needs to read but I feel better for posting it :

Well, I'm back I guess.
I've been becoming less and less of an asshole lately (I hope) and looking back from here I'd just like to apologise for, heh, everything
I've done this kind of personal self-righteous catharsis rant a few times, but each time I'd just continue, not realizing that i was STILL BEING AN ASSHAT ARGH
So this is me I guess. Once and for all. Also, I'm a girl now. Just go with it.
I'll make a new proper account at some point, once I've made a new email address which doesn't use my male name and I've thought of a not-shit username

Oh yeah. That.
I deliberately tried to make as little fuss as possible 'cause I'm bad at explaining stuff like this.
Basically, I only "officially" decided I was trans a few months ago. No-one actually knows yet. I thought you comrades people might as well know, since we'll (probably) never meet IRL and it won't get awkward with my extremely transphobic mum. So yeah.

PS: yeah I was that owl guy
PPS: "you too?" who else? What happened?
PPPS: btw I haven't been lurking around on this forum awkwardly waiting for replies, I was on other tabs honest

"You too" referring to me. "I only *officially* decided I was trans a few months ago. Nobody actually knows yet." pretty much sums it up for me as well; only my girlfriend knows out of the people I know IRL (not counting Clavain). So yeah, that makes two of us in a similar situation.

Well hey, that's a hell of a....thing. Hope it all works out.

on a different note, I've been ill lately and I don't have facebonk or twatter so this forum is currently my only vent.
If I come back ranting in a few days about politics or some shiz, you'll know why I guess.

Post by Kasei Mon 16 Feb 2015 - 21:23

So changing subject, how's general things for everybody ?
I'm at university this year, which makes quite a big change from school. Not living at home for a start, that along make you suddenly realise how bad at cooking you are (I can't do much besides rice and pasta...). The lessons themselves are kinda different too : there's way more people so you're mostly a lot more anonymous. This means you're left to your own devices a lot more, and most teachers don't even check if you come or not (which makes it a test of willpower when it's freezing cold and rainy at 8h in the morning and you'd really rather stay in bed...)
But at least by the time you get to university, you've usually chosen something you actually enjoy. Since I'm doing literature, it's nice in the sense that all the lessons are actually interesting, which is rare in school.

Literature, eh? Where are you going with that?

I'm still at school because I am little babby.
I've been pretty decided for a long time that I want to do something musical with my life, so my current goal is to get my shit together and record something before I leave school. I'm not entirely convinced about further education as I'm not sure how much it will help me. In the meantime I'm juggling exam preparation and coursework and anxiety and it's all moving very slowly. But yeah.

spoiler'd angry education rant:

In summation, I've recently accepted that school will teach me barely any of the things that I want and need to know and have therefore resolved to teach myself more of said things.

imsosorry wrote:Literature, eh? Where are you going with that?
Translation, most likely. The first three years of university I'll be studying French literature, and from that, I'll go into a master's degree in translation. Being already bilingual, it seems like an obvious choice, and you can work from home which is a big plus.
I went into literature when I realised that science just didn't really interest me and I wouldn't want to spend my life working in it. I could have gone onto law studies, but it's too stressful of an atmosphere and not really interesting, either.

That's actually a good mindset for school until it allows you to specialise in what you actually want to be doing (which is quite late in England, I believe). I've been teaching myself a bunch of things (basic japanese, piano...) and the only thing really stopping me from doing it more is lack of time. Since people tend to have more free time the earlier on they are in education, it's a good idea to try and make use of that time to learn things that they actually enjoy.

IB - International Baccalaureate

WHYY

Six subjects, three standards and three highers. You have six categories and have to pick one of each, so:
(these aren't the official order, I don't know what that is)
1: English/native language - in our school can choose from standard, higher, or theater and performance
2: Maths - in our school can choose from studies (lowest), standard, or higher, standard and studies are worth the same points-wise but some courses at university require standard level
3: Foreign language - can be ab initio (started at the beginning), or continued from GCSE
4: Humanity - our school offers classics, philosophy, economics, psychology, geography, history and probably some other stuff
5: Science - so there's biology, chemistry, physics, but then for the artist this particular type of design studied in a special way, computer science which is programming and some theory, and environmental systems and societies which is basically geography for the non-scientist
6: Art - (film, art) or any extra subject (so another humanity, another science, another foreign language)
Then there's compulsory community service (a lot of it as well), compulsory TOK (theory of knowledge, meta-philosophy), and compulsory EE (extended essay) which is 4000 words of well-researched writing in a subject of your choice

LIFE IS HARD, LIFE IS VERY HARD

So I do:
Maths standard (required for computer science at university, but every now and then I talk to someone who does studies and they did the area of a triangle that day and a small part of me dies inside)
German standard (continued from GCSE)
Film standard (50% analysing films like you analyse books, 50% making films)
English higher (ESSAYS!!!)
History higher (ESSAYS WHICH REQUIRE LARGE AMOUNTS OF RESEARCH BUT I LOVE THIS SO MUCH OMG)
Computer science higher (funtimes, but requires large amounts of work to keep up outside of school and a lot of learning for the theory)
I'm doing my extended essay on "To what extent is the Trial of the Twenty-One significant to the historian studying Stalin's Terror?" which is history, about the Moscow Show Trials.

At first it's a bit like dying really slowly. You get home at 17:00, work until between 09:30 and 03:00 whilst working whilst eating/making food, working whilst in the bath, then wake up at 06:30 and the cycle begins again. On top of this you're in a class with people in the year above who are all laughing at you with "YOU THINK THIS IS BAD? WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR, HA!" which is utterly terrifying. Admittedly every now and then your work would be done by 20:00 and you'd appreciate it so much.

However, I at least adapted. I began to find out that work doesn't have to be done straight away, that backlogs are natural, and that awful, awful quality is sometimes acceptable. Once I started hallucinating I stopped trying as much and investing as much time, plus my workload dramatically decreased last term or reasons beyond my understanding, so now I'm at terms with my life. I have a maths tutor, German is royally fucked RIP rest in level 3s (max is level 7), and history essays have been limited to four hours of research. Because I never want to write an essay again I'm doing computer science at university instead of history which I probably prefer, but I'd like a job in computer science anyway. Software development is cool and suitably nerdy. I now think it's acceptable to stay up late and sleep a bit less as long as you can still do stuff you enjoy.

Basically DO A-LEVELS ALL OF YOU WHO ARE IN A POSITION TO MOVE INTO SIXTH-FORM SOON! IB is shit and they don't even tell you. Here are some reasons:
- The IB history mark scheme literally took some of the answers copy-pasted from wiki-answers, that's the official exam board
- Relative to difficulty, universities really do prefer A-Levels and it's easier to get in with them
- No one even knows how the IB works so you're less likely to get a job because people will be confused with your mark
- You have to do all these subjects you might not want to do like a foreign language and maths
- You have to do a lot of community service and write it up, this shit is time-consuming
- You're effectively doing seven subjects

BTW Ferox and I worked this out:
Miscellaneous discussion Reales10

I spend way longer than three hours a night on homework they never observe that...
